New English Teacer (JET) Daniel Ervin

11月18日

Recently, in our English class, we are reading about girls’ education around the world. In some countries, almost all children go to school. Almost everyone learns reading, writing, and math. In other countries, many children can’t go to school. There is especially a problem for girls around the world.

While I was doing research for class, I found some quotes from children in Afghanistan about their experiences. One girl was asked why she didn’t go to school. She said, “By the time we walked to school, the school day would end.” The school is too far away for her. Another boy said, “The road to the school has many thieves and bad boys.” It is too dangerous for him to go to school.

It is interesting to read about the experience of students from other countries. I feel sad when I read about these children’s experiences. I also feel happy that I am a teacher, because I think education is important. When you hear stories like this, how do you feel?

Word hints: education (things connected to school, teaching, and students); research (searching for more information about a topic); quote (something a person said); experience (something that happened in a person’s life)

【NEW JET】 Daniel Ervin  (Dan)

Hello hello! My name is Daniel Ervin, but everyone calls me Dan. Im the new JET Program English Teacher at Kiyose High School. Before Kiyose, I spent 3 years teaching at Ogasawara High School in Chichijima. Chichijima was the first place I lived in Japan, so living and teaching in Tokyo is a very new and exciting experience for me. Please give me lots of advice and recommendations, especially about food, because I love to eat.
I am originally from Omaha, Nebraska, in the United States. Nebraska is almost exactly in the center of the country, right between New York and Los Angeles. Omaha is Nebraska’s only big city, but it’s a really cool place. People of many different cultural backgrounds and communities live there, so it has a wide variety of foods, music, and art. It also has a really famous zoo, said to be the best in the world by TripAdvisor.com. It’s not the most famous place in the United States, but I think you should visit if you can. You can experience a very authentic view of the United States there. Outside of Omaha, Nebraska is mostly farmland and prairie. Many people think it’s a boring place, but for me, the open land and big blue skies are really beautiful. When I looked out at the ocean in Ogasawara, the big, flat, open space reminded me of home!
In university, I studied English literature and religious studies. I enjoy reading and learning new things, especially about history, religion, and culture. That’s why, in university, I studied abroad in Varanasi, India, for about four months. I learned a lot about Hinduism and Islam while living there. I also learned how interesting it is to live abroad. That’s when I decided to try living outside the US after graduation. I was interested in Japanese culture and religion, so I applied for the JET Program. It was a great decision, because I can learn something new every day!
I love teaching English, and I am really excited to meet and work together with you. In class and outside of class, I like to focus on communication. The best way to improve your English is to practice every day! Any time you would like to practice, or need help, please let me know. I’m here to help you in any way I can. Thanks for reading, and see you soon!
